October 2006 Spirituality is incorporated into every aspect of Balinese lifestyle and their devotion towards maintaining a harmony between good and evil has blessed them with a genuine warmth and kindness bestowed to all visitors from all walks of life.
Karmic fate is deeply ingrained into Balinese consciousness. Balinese believe that success or hardship is a direct result of their karmic retribution and as such, positive change can only occur through self reflection and self improvement. Physical and mental ailments are seen as a karmic punishment to prior sin and wickedness. As such, many Balinese with disabilities live in relative isolation due to these cultural attitudes toward their condition. Embarrassment, shame and lack of understanding often prevent people with disabilities from pursuing treatment or finding ways to live happy and full filling lives. Senang Hati Foundation was formed in 2001 in an effort to raise the self confidence of people with disabilities and encourage social, economic and physical independence and integration. Operated entirely from donations and volunteer assistance, the Senang Hati Foundation has given disabled children and young adults an opportunity to venture for the first time from their villages and mix with people having similar challenges.
On 20th of October, Komang had the honor of meeting many of the members and residents of Senang Hati Foundation. After a guided tour of the facilities (headed and flanked by excited wheel chaired escorts), many of the members fired questions to the Champ about healthy eating and exercise techniques that could help to sculpt their bodies and assist with treatment. The quick wit, great sense of humor and creative skill of many of the foundation’s members made a fun and inspirational day for all concerned. Special thanks to Wayan Kecil (Little Wayan), one of the smallest members of the foundation who was a great help in giving out signed posters to all his friends whose disability prevented them from leaving their dormitory. The energy of this kid is extraordinary and his speed on crutches rivals any 5 year old!
Sub note: The Senang Hati Foundation is trying to address social, economic, cultural, educational, physical and creative needs through a broad range of activities. If you would like to contribute or learn more, please view their website at www.senanghatibali.com |
